Its about time

Lick and Lather Video Personal Response

I found this artist to be very intersting. She really brought herself into her work. She seemed use the concept of the natural, such as birth and nursing, in her art work. I would have to say that my favorite work of art shown in the video was where she walked on the horizon. I found that to be very unique and just awesome how she found a way to fulfill not only her dream but also an idea that seems almost impossible. The lick and lather artwork was also very interesting. Once again, she brought herself into the work. Her ideas and concepts are just amazing and really makes you think twice about something that we often seem to take for granted and helps us see it in a new light.

Momento

Response to Token Handout

I do not agree with the idea of the lottery system to decide wether to admit a child into the hospital or not. However, I do like the concept of the mothers leaving a token as an identification. This reminds me of the movie Annie, how she kept a sliced, or broken, locket while her parents had the other half. Also, I do not agree that a mother should just leave the child on the steps of the hospital.

Explanation

This piece is a memento of my childhood. The keyhole symbolizes looking into the past of my childhood. The sticks, grass, and bark are symbolizes the treed arch in the wood behind my house. The sticks piled up shows how as a child I would play with lincoln logs, as well as stacking sticks at the roots of trees for ants and bugs. I choose these materials because of its fragility. Childhood is very fragile and can break easily if handled wrong, the same as this piece.

I did not really have many obstacles with this piece beside the grass. It was difficult to wrap and tie the grass as it could break if pulled hard. However, despite the difficulty, it was worth it because the grass completes the piece.

Paper Stacking

Tomato

Obstacles I had to try and overcome with this project was time management and the fruit itself. My version of the fruit is rather flat compared to the plastic one I bought. I had trouble trying to get the curves of the round shape, as well as the curves on the top with the grooves.

My inventive paper stacking is based on Dr. Seuss' "Oh the places you'll go" and
his imaginative world and landscapes.

Masked Identity

Episode 468: Switcheroo Personal Response

I found this to be quite boring. Perhaps it was because I was merely listening and not watching. I am naturally a visual person, not only as an art student. I tend to pay attention more easily if I am able to see what is being spoken. So listening to this episode was not very interesting for me. However, the beginning, where they talked about someone else trying to be you, was an interesting idea. If someone did try and claim to be me, I would let them. It gives me a day of rest from my life.

Explanation

My mask is suppose to represent a nesting doll of the Russian culture as that is where I am from. To try and add a little more design to, I tried to add what is suppose to be snowballs on the side since Russia has a lot of show.

One of the obstacles I had to try and overcome with this project was getting the tracing paper to form around the curves since my piece was made up entirely of curves.

Gregor's Room

Formal Response to Gregor's Room

As I was reading this story, everything aside from Gregor seemed to be an eggshell white. Since the family was not the center of the story, I seemed to put them in the background of the picture as I was imagining this in my mind. The only color that seemed to exist was Gregor. He appeared in my mind as any other bug would, brown. I pictured Gregor as a cockroach. His back curved, a hard smooth shell in different hues of brown. The whole story as I pictured it was in a spot color form.

Personal Response to Gregor's Room

I felt that this piece of work is quite interesting. From the beginning you find yourself in a strange world where a man has been turned into a bug. However, through out the piece as you read along, you start to gain a familiarity with the piece, as any story goes. I found myself disgusted at the beginning, as I do not like bugs. However, as I kept reading, I found myself not so much as caring but curious as to what would happen to Gregor. Once I read that he had died, I felt a tad sorry for Gregor. Although this is a very strange piece, you start to develop a familiarity and relationship with the characters, like any other story you may read. This story also shows in its own unique way that every morning will not be the same. One morning you may wake up and find that you have been turned into a bug. Because you will never know what will happen the next day, waking up every morning is a gamble we all take. One morning you wake up and you go to school or work, eat, play, sleep, and so on. The next, your life is drastically changed and it will never be the same again. The subject matter of this story was very strange and bizarre through out the piece but can still be considered a nice work of literature and art.

Explanation

In the end, the piece as my peers would say turned out to be cool and graphic look. I didn't want the black to overwhelm so I simply painted all the edges of the bed with black and kept the rest white. Because I saw this as spot color, I painted Gregor black and brown.

The obstacle was the most obvious. Trying to create this piece with only paper. Another obstacle was painting Gregor and trying to keep his leg in place because they kept trying to get out.
